Ukrainian Navy Sinks Russian Drone in First Naval USV Battle

The Ukrainian Navy and military intelligence agency destroyed a Russian attack uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) in the Black Sea, marking the first documented direct drone-on-drone naval battle between the two nations. The engagement occurred in the sea space between Odesa and Crimea, a region frequently targeted by Russian USVs.

Ukraine deployed a Sargan-3000 remotely piloted vessel equipped with a Kongsberg Protector Remote Weapon Station and a 12.7mm machine gun to sink the target. The Russian vessel was identified as an improved Orcan-type drone, also known as Zefir or Zephyr, which is designed for explosive attacks. Ukrainian officials stated there were no survivors in the clash.

This operation represents a shift in naval tactics, as USVs have typically been used as expendable strike weapons rather than for direct interception. The event follows a broader escalation in drone warfare, including Russia's use of Iranian kamikaze drones and Ukraine's development of systems to intercept strikes and attack Russian territory.
