Enterprise Agentic AI Pilots Fail Due to Data Gaps

Enterprise AI pilots are failing to reach production as poor data integration and high costs lead many businesses to scrap their initiatives.

Enterprise agentic AI pilots are frequently failing to reach production or deliver measurable profit and loss effects. Research from the MIT NANDA initiative indicates that 95% of generative AI pilots failed to impact profit and loss, while S&P Global Market Intelligence found that 42% of businesses scrapped most AI initiatives in 2025.

Data quality remains the primary bottleneck for these deployments. A Boston Consulting Group study found that 79% of companies are blocked by a lack of expertise in managing unstructured data and 68% lack access to high-quality data. Only 5% of companies are currently generating AI value at scale due to these management issues.

Gartner predicts over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by 2027, citing rising costs and weak risk controls. Experts suggest these AI agents fail for the same reasons new hires do, as they cannot perform tasks when necessary information is undocumented or inconsistent across internal systems.
