Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal defended India's first-quarter GDP growth of 7.8 percent for FY27, asserting that the figures are compiled through an independent statistical process free from political interference. Speaking at a National Workshop on Leveraging Free Trade Agreements, Goyal dismissed criticisms from political opponents and former officials who questioned the data's credibility.
Among the critics was former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, who cited previous GDP revisions as a reason to doubt the current figures. Goyal characterized such criticism as "sour grapes" and urged stakeholders to ignore narratives questioning the validity of the data.
The 7.8 percent growth rate, released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, exceeded the Reserve Bank of India's 7 percent projection. This figure also represents an increase over the 6.9 percent growth recorded during the same quarter of the previous year.
