Indian Rupee Gains as Brent Crude Prices Plunge
The Indian rupee appreciated above 95 per US dollar on Wednesday following a sharp drop in oil prices linked to potential US-Iran diplomacy.
The Indian rupee rose 46 paise to open above 95 per US dollar on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. This currency appreciation followed a significant drop in Brent crude oil prices, which fell to approximately $78.80 per barrel from a recent peak of $102. The market shift was driven by optimism surrounding a diplomatic resolution to the five-month US-Iran conflict.
Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, stated that "a deal could be finalised within the next two days." This optimism is supported by a proposal from the Government of Qatar to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to mitigate supply disruptions. The rupee's recovery was further bolstered by capital inflows and interventions by the Reserve Bank of India.
Market attention remains on the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy announcement on Wednesday. Analysts expect the bank to maintain the repo rate at 5.25%, with a focus on Governor Sanjay Malhotra's commentary regarding liquidity and inflation.
