Alaska Democratic Party Sues Over Rural Voting Site Closures
The Alaska Democratic Party and Midnight Sun Independence Fund sued the Alaska Division of Elections over failed absentee voting site openings in rural communities.
The Alaska Democratic Party and the Midnight Sun Independence Fund filed lawsuits against the Alaska Division of Elections, alleging that several absentee-in-person voting sites in rural communities failed to open as promised. The filings claim that multiple locations, specifically within Alaska Native communities, did not operate during the first week of early voting that began October 19.
These closures reportedly forced some voters to utilize expensive air or boat travel to reach alternative voting sites. Carol Beecher, the director of the Division of Elections, responded to these claims in a letter to State Senator Bill Wielechowski. Beecher stated that while 12 of the 18 flagged locations reported being open, three declined to operate and three did not respond.
In a separate legal development regarding the state's political landscape, a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration that sought to block the certification of the Alaska Senate race.
