Microsoft Patents Ad-Credit System for Xbox and PC Gaming

Microsoft filed a patent for a system that grants players timed game access in exchange for watching advertisements during natural gameplay breaks.

Microsoft filed a patent for a contextually aware advertising system designed to integrate promotional content into Xbox and PC gaming sessions. The technology identifies natural pause points—such as loading screens, the completion of a mission, or the end of a boss fight—to display video or static advertisements without disrupting active gameplay. In exchange for viewing these ads, players earn ad-credits that provide periods of uninterrupted play, typically ranging from 15 minutes to one hour.

This strategy mirrors mobile gaming monetization and follows a July 2026 test where Xbox Insiders accessed one hour of cloud gaming after watching two minutes of ads. The system may utilize machine learning and developer APIs to ensure ads do not trigger during intense moments like battles. Implementation of this technology could potentially lead to an ad-supported tier of Xbox Game Pass, though it may necessitate the end of offline play for those users.

The push for new revenue streams comes amid a broader business restructuring led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. To improve profitability following declines in hardware revenue, the company has executed thousands of job cuts across the gaming division, including 268 positions at Xbox Game Studios and first-party developers. Additionally, Microsoft announced that monthly cloud gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers will begin in November 2026.
