Thailand Revokes Citizenship of Chief Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor

The Government of Thailand revoked the citizenship of Chief Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor for using an American passport after becoming a Thai citizen.

The Prime Minister and Interior Minister of Thailand revoked the citizenship of Yosef Chaim Kantor, the country's Chief Rabbi and chief Chabad-Lubavitch emissary. Thai authorities stated the decision followed the discovery that Rabbi Kantor continued to use an American passport for international travel after obtaining Thai citizenship, an act that violates local law.

The revocation follows a series of raids by authorities on multiple locations in Bangkok to investigate Rabbi Kantor's business activities, properties, and financial transactions. Despite these investigations, officials have not yet found evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Chabad-Lubavitch expressed regret over the decision and stated the matter is being addressed through appropriate legal channels. The organization confirmed that Chabad Houses in Thailand remain operational and continue to welcome Jewish and Israeli visitors.
