Kellogg's Reformulates Cereals Due to Climate-Driven Grain Shortages
Kellogg's has removed whole rice from Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, introducing wheat gluten to maintain quality amid changing weather conditions.
Kellanova reformulated the recipes for Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, replacing whole rice with rice flour and a blend of rice and corn flour. The company stated the change was necessary because changing weather conditions affected the quality and availability of the grains used in its cereals.
This reformulation introduces wheat gluten as an ingredient, rendering both products unsuitable for consumers with wheat allergies or coeliac disease. To address this, the company added prominent allergen labeling to the packaging. Kellanova maintains that the updated recipes preserve the products' non-HFSS status and their levels of iron, vitamin D, and fiber.
The recipe shift comes as Rice Krispies experiences a decline in both sales volume and value, according to data from The Grocer magazine's Top Products Survey 2026.
