Billionaires Steve and Sue Mandel Fund Centrist Democratic Faction

Steve and Sue Mandel invested $20 million to establish Majority Democrats, a centrist movement challenging the Democratic Party's ideological left.

Hedge-fund billionaires Steve and Sue Mandel have invested at least $20 million to create a centrist faction within the Democratic Party. Operating through their primary vehicle, Majority Democrats, the couple aims to merge populist appeal with centrist policies to challenge the party's ideological left.

The initiative includes the funding of the Searchlight Institute, a think tank developing policy alternatives to Medicare for All, and The Bench, a candidate incubator that prioritizes personal narratives over standard party talking points. The movement is designed as a proving ground for young, non-far-left Democratic lawmakers.

Following the November 3 midterm elections, the group will host a "What's Next?" conference in Denver. The event is expected to draw approximately 2,000 Democrats and potential 2028 presidential candidates. While supporters claim the party must move away from strict ideology to achieve electoral victory, critics such as Justice Democrats have dismissed the effort as a "Diet Coke" version of politics that preserves the existing Democratic establishment.
