Sand Springs Approves Google Data Center Despite Local Lawsuit

The Sand Springs City Council voted 6-1 on February 3, 2026, to approve the rezoning of an 827-acre property for a proposed Google data center project known as Project Spring. Developed by White Rose Partners, the project may include up to three data centers with construction scheduled to begin in 2027 and operations starting in 2029.

The decision sparked significant community backlash over concerns regarding noise, environmental impacts, and water usage. The Sand Springs Alliance, a local grassroots organization, filed a lawsuit alleging that city officials violated annexation policies to bring the property within city limits.

Mayor Jim Spoon defended the approval, stating the city would not encounter another such opportunity and expressing confidence in Google as a partner. Conversely, Sand Springs Alliance president Kyle Schmidt criticized the city's process as government overreach, claiming officials railroaded the project over citizens without proper input.
