China Clean Tech Exports Cut 450 Million Tons of CO2
China's clean technology exports are projected to reduce global carbon emissions by 450 million metric tons in 2026, primarily benefiting the Global South.
Clean technology exports from China are projected to reduce global carbon emissions by 450 million metric tons in 2026. According to an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, this reduction is equivalent to the annual fossil fuel emissions of Brazil. The total avoided emissions over the lifetime of equipment exported in 2026 are forecast to reach 8,400 million tons of CO2.
Exports of electric vehicles, batteries, wind turbines, and solar panels are primarily decarbonizing fossil-heavy power grids across the Global South. While these exports have lowered per-unit prices and affected revenues for incumbent producers, the analysis indicates that the technology has created new markets rather than displacing existing ones.
Ahead of the COP31 climate summit, the Chinese government has characterized clean technology tariffs as a barrier to global climate action and intends to oppose such measures.
