Bank of England Considers AI Stress Test for Financial Sector
The Bank of England is planning a system-wide exploratory scenario to assess how AI-driven trading and cyber vulnerabilities could impact United Kingdom financial resilience.
The Bank of England is considering artificial intelligence as the primary focus for its next system-wide exploratory scenario to measure the resilience of the United Kingdom financial sector. Regulators are concerned that autonomous AI agents used in trading could trigger market meltdowns through herding behavior. Additional risks include AI-driven cyber vulnerabilities and the potential for a bursting valuation bubble to cause widespread economic fallout.
The bank is currently finalizing a separate exploratory scenario focused on private markets, which incorporates some AI disruption within a broader hypothetical global recession.
Governor Andrew Bailey noted that while AI has the potential to boost growth, the market may be overestimating future returns. He also identified AI as a significant concern regarding cyber security.
