Ghana Banks Meet Regulatory Capital Requirements

Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama announced that all 23 banks in the country have met regulatory capital requirements following a sector recovery process.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana Johnson Pandit Asiama announced that all 23 banks operating in Ghana have met their regulatory capital requirements. The announcement, made during the 43rd Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Association of Banks, marks the end of a recovery process following the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. Previously, 13 banks had breached these requirements due to asset impairments and an economic crisis.

Banking sector assets rose 20.47% to GH¢500.20 billion as of August 2026, with the Capital Adequacy Ratio improving to 19.10%. These benchmarks are designed to ensure financial institutions can absorb potential losses and protect depositors. However, officials noted that these figures represent regulatory compliance and scale rather than a comprehensive measure of overall profitability.

Despite the recovery, Asiama warned that banks must reduce Non-Performing Loan ratios to 10% by December 2026. To ensure long-term resilience against future financial shocks, the Bank of Ghana is developing new directives regarding the Liquidity Coverage Ratio, Credit Risk Management, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence.
