Republicans Promote Tax Cuts as Midterm Early Voting Begins

Congressional Republicans are defending the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's tax cuts while Democrats link rising living costs to recent foreign policy decisions.

Congressional Republicans are promoting the tax policies of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) as early voting for the midterm elections commences. During a House Ways and Means Committee field hearing on Tuesday, Chairman Jason Smith defended the $3.3 trillion legislation, arguing it provides essential relief for families and small businesses by making several 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions permanent.

The OBBBA maintains reduced tax rates and the Child Tax Credit, while introducing four-year tax deductions for tips, overtime, and Social Security. The Tax Foundation estimated the act would lower taxes in every state and add 828,000 jobs by 2025.

Democrats, including Senator Mark Warner, contend that these tax benefits are offset by a high cost of living. They specifically attribute skyrocketing fuel and fertilizer costs to the Trump administration's foreign policy, citing the February 28 joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran as a primary driver of inflation. A late August Voters' Voice Poll shows 47% of registered voters favor Democratic candidates, compared to 42% for Republicans.
