Alberta Justice Minister Rejects Request to Delay 2027 Election

Justice Minister Mickey Amery rejected a request from the chief electoral officer to postpone the 2027 provincial election amid disputes over new electoral boundaries.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery has rejected a request from Gordon McClure, the chief electoral officer of Elections Alberta, to postpone the provincial general election scheduled for October 18, 2027. McClure had urged the province to either delay the vote or maintain current electoral boundaries, arguing that one year is insufficient to implement new maps. He noted that Elections Alberta is the leanest electoral management body in Canada and remains stretched thin following an October 19 separation referendum.

McClure warned that the agency cannot concurrently prepare for two different boundary scenarios and requires up to 18 months for proper implementation. Minister Amery dismissed these concerns and the possibility of legal challenges as hypothetical judicial outcomes, asserting that the legislature will finalize boundaries by the end of the fall sitting. This timeline leaves the agency approximately 11 months to prepare.

The dispute coincides with a contentious report on new electoral boundaries. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi accused the United Conservative Party of gerrymandering ridings in Calgary and Lethbridge to ensure a government victory, threatening to challenge the maps on constitutional grounds. Premier Danielle Smith denied these allegations of vote manipulation and defended the integrity of the boundary panel's chair, former judge Brian O’Ferrall.
