Bulgaria Fuel Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Tensions

Bulgaria faces rising fuel costs and gasoline shortages as geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran drive prices toward 1.80 euros per liter.

Fuel prices in Bulgaria are rising sharply amid geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. Diesel prices are approaching 1.80 euros per liter, with some stations in Veliko Tarnovo already selling the fuel for 1.77 euros. Gasoline supplies have begun to deplete, and wholesale bases in Ruse have reported total stockouts.

Nikolay Nikolov, representing the Association of Small Fuel Traders, reported that wholesale diesel is priced at 1,675 euros per 1,000 liters. He warned that retail prices will continue to climb if relations between the US and Iran do not improve. Nikolov urged the Government of Bulgaria to prioritize domestic demand over foreign trucks purchasing large quantities of fuel from local stations to prevent further shortages.

These local shortages align with a broader European trend. Data from Eurostat released August 21 shows that fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport in Bulgaria rose 22.2% year-on-year in July 2026, the third-highest increase in the European Union. This follows a general EU average increase of 16.9%, driven largely by the US-Israeli war on Iran.
