Tata Consultancy Services Deploys AI Engineers and Seeks Acquisitions
Tata Consultancy Services is creating a team of up to 8,900 forward-deployed engineers to accelerate client AI adoption while pivoting toward strategic AI acquisitions.
Tata Consultancy Services is establishing a team of 5,900 to 8,900 forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) to help clients accelerate AI adoption and customize tools for specific business needs. The company aims to convert 1% to 1.5% of its total associate base into these specialized roles, placing the firm in direct competition with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft for high-level talent.
This strategy addresses investor concerns that artificial intelligence could disrupt India's $315 billion IT services industry by reducing the need for traditional engineering teams. CEO K Krithivasan rejected the idea that AI would undermine the outsourcing model, arguing that deep knowledge of customer environments provides a competitive advantage. The firm currently invests approximately $1 billion annually in talent development and AI accessibility.
In a shift from its historical reliance on organic growth, the company is now evaluating acquisitions in AI, data security, and cybersecurity to enhance its strategic positioning. These moves come as the company faces a slowdown in annualized AI revenue growth, which dropped to 13% in the first quarter from 28% in the previous quarter.
