India Auto Retail Hits Record 2.5 Million Units in September
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association reported record September sales of 2,536,920 units, driven by strong growth across most vehicle categories.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association reported that India's automobile industry achieved its best-ever September in 2026, with retail sales reaching 2,536,920 units. This represents a 31.82 per cent increase year-on-year, with growth spanning five of six vehicle categories. Passenger vehicle sales rose 32.1 per cent to 427,213 units, while commercial vehicles crossed the 100,000-unit mark for the first time with a 37.62 per cent increase. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers grew by 33.08 per cent and 22.25 per cent, respectively.
Industry analysis indicates the annual growth figure is skewed by a distorted base from September 2025, a period when buyers deferred purchases before the implementation of GST 2.0. A more accurate underlying run-rate for the first five months of FY27 is estimated at 17 per cent. In the passenger vehicle segment, petrol and alternative fuels reached near parity, accounting for 41.27 per cent and 41 per cent of sales, respectively. Electric vehicle retail hit an all-time monthly high of approximately 3.34 lakh units, representing 13 per cent overall penetration.
Despite the record volumes, the association remains cautiously optimistic about the upcoming festive season. Dealers have warned that further price increases could erode affordability, which they identify as the primary risk to achieving durable growth in the coming quarter.
