Illinois Opens Early Voting for November 3 General Election

Early voting for the November 3 general election began across Illinois on September 24, 2026, initiating a 40-day window for in-person and mail-in participation. Eric Sorensen, a U.S. Representative, joined local leaders at a press conference in Rock Island to urge citizens to vote early to avoid potential Election Day intimidation and ensure their ballots are counted.

In Rock Island County, Clerk Karen Kinney coordinated the distribution of mail-in ballots and the opening of the County Clerk's Office for voting. Off-site early voting is scheduled to begin October 13 at the Moline Public Library, the Moline Municipal Building, and the Silvis City Council Chambers. To address concerns over postal reliability, Kinney highlighted a secure dropbox at 1504 3rd Ave, while Jessily Joseph of the Peoria County Commission warned that changes to postal postmark rules could affect mail-in ballots.

Election officials noted the financial and operational impact of the extended voting period. Kinney reported that additional staffing and overtime for election judges increase taxpayer costs, a point echoed by Brown County Clerk Jenny Welty, who manages a specific taxpayer-funded budget line for elections. However, Welty noted that barcode-based express votes have reduced printing costs and paper waste.

Matt Dietrich of the Illinois State Board of Elections clarified that ballots cast during early voting are final and cannot be retrieved or changed. While registration remains available through Election Day, Kinney noted that the registration method changes after October 6 and October 19.
