Meta Platforms Inc. Withdraws From RE100 Over AI Gas Investments
Meta Platforms Inc. left the RE100 renewable energy initiative after investing in natural gas plants to power its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
After a decade of membership, Meta Platforms Inc. withdrew from the RE100 global renewable energy initiative in July 2026. The UK-based nonprofit Climate Group, which manages the pact, removed the company from its membership list after determining that Meta Platforms Inc. could no longer meet the initiative's technical criteria due to investments in new gas power and tightened reporting rules.
To support its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, Meta Platforms Inc. signed deals to bring several natural gas plants online. These include 10 plants dedicated to powering its Hyperion data center campus in Louisiana and a 200-megawatt facility in Ohio. Additionally, the company ended its participation in the Energy Buyers Alliance's Clean Energy Procurement Academy.
Meta Platforms Inc. described the exit as mutual and maintains that it still intends to match its total electricity use with 100% clean energy on an annualized basis through long-term power purchase agreements and renewable energy certificates. This shift aligns with a broader industry trend where tech giants balance climate goals with high-performance power demands; Microsoft recently partnered with Chevron for natural gas electricity in West Texas, and Google has pursued similar non-renewable sources.
