Northeastern University Faculty Call for DHS Abolition at Town Hall
Northeastern University faculty and students criticized university surveillance contracts and demonstration restrictions during a town hall hosted by the Young Democratic Socialists of America.
The Northeastern Young Democratic Socialists of America hosted a town hall on November 4 to address immigration policy, university contracts, and campus demonstration restrictions following the midterm elections. During the event, faculty panelists Rachel Rosenbloom and Martin Blatt advocated for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.
Participants criticized Northeastern University for its $36 million contract with the Department of Homeland Security for digital surveillance and its role in the ALERT program for explosives screening. The discussion also focused on the university's strict demonstration policies, which administration tightened following pro-Palestinian encampments in April 2024.
University leadership, including President Joseph E. Aoun, declined invitations to attend the event. Vice President for Communications Renata Nyul defended the institution's policies, stating that the university expects community members to express their views without projecting hostility toward others.
