Candidates File Nominations for Negeri Sembilan State Election

Candidates for the Negeri Sembilan state election submitted their nomination papers on July 18, 2026, across eight centers. A total of 103 candidates from seven parties and four independents are contesting 36 assembly seats. The election was triggered by a constitutional crisis involving the state ruler and a subsequent loss of confidence in Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun after 14 UMNO assemblymen withdrew their support.

The contest features a significant shift in alliances. Pakatan Harapan (PH) is contesting all 36 seats, while Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have entered an informal pact, contesting 25 and 11 seats respectively. The political climate remains strained by an unresolved royal crisis that began in April 2026, when four traditional ruling chiefs attempted to remove Tuanku Muhriz over alleged misconduct. While Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar was later proclaimed ruler, the move has not been formally recognized.

Eligible voters numbering 889,490 will participate in early voting on July 28, with the general polling day set for August 1. The Election Commission has coordinated the process, while police deployed over 6,000 personnel to maintain order. The outcome is viewed as a critical test for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's leadership and may influence the timing of the next Malaysian general election.
