South Korea Exports Surge 61.5% on AI Demand
South Korea recorded a 61.5% increase in early August exports driven by AI semiconductors, prompting the Bank of Korea to consider further interest rate hikes.
South Korea saw exports grow 61.5% year-on-year during the first 20 days of August, resulting in a trade surplus of nearly $14 billion. This growth was primarily driven by artificial intelligence-related demand, with semiconductor exports rising 198.8% and computer-related products jumping 242.1%. Conversely, automobile exports declined by approximately 45% during the same period.
The Bank of Korea is evaluating this export strength alongside inflation data to determine its next policy move. The central bank raised the benchmark interest rate to 2.75% last month. While headline inflation slowed to 2.8% in July, core inflation accelerated to 2.6%, indicating persistent price pressures.
Economists are currently debating whether the bank will implement another interest rate hike in August or October to maintain economic stability. The recent customs data provides critical input for the bank's upcoming policy meeting as it balances strong trade performance against stubborn core inflation.
