Citizen Group Sues Hermantown Over Google Data Center Zoning

Stop the Hermantown Data Center filed a lawsuit against the City of Hermantown on April 29, 2026, challenging zoning changes intended for a planned Google data center. The non-profit citizen group alleges the city violated state laws, specifically citing spot-zoning restrictions in the Adolph neighborhood. The legal action includes nine counts involving arbitrary decision-making, data practices, and the use of closed meetings.

The dispute centers on a site by Arrowhead Station near Midway Road and Highway 2. In October, the Hermantown City Council voted 4-0 to rezone more than 200 acres for the project. Opponents argue the development threatens agricultural land and an environmentally sensitive area located near rural homes.

The project is currently undergoing an environmental review and is subject to a separate lawsuit regarding its environmental impact. City officials have declined to comment on the matter, stating they do not discuss pending litigation.
