Border Force Diverts Migrant Boat to Dover Amid Protests

The UK Border Force diverted a migrant dinghy carrying approximately 60 people to Dover on Tuesday after the vessel spent over 33 hours at sea. The boat departed from Vierville-sur-Mer, Normandy, on Monday and reportedly refused assistance from the French coastguard. While the passengers were initially expected to disembark at Haslar Marina in Gosport, the vessel was rerouted east following intense pressure from local officials and the gathering of hundreds of anti-migrant protesters.

Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones and MP Dame Caroline Dinenage lobbied the Home Office to prevent the landing in Gosport, arguing the area was not equipped to process arrivals and was susceptible to blockades. In Gosport, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested six people for offenses including aggravated trespass and assaulting emergency workers. Authorities are also investigating a video of far-right activist Daniel Thomas allegedly slashing a boat in the English Channel to obstruct rescue efforts.

Separately, Defence Minister Luke Pollard defended national border security after five migrants made an undetected landing at Folkestone on Monday, the first such incident in a year. While a Home Office investigation is underway to determine how the boat avoided interception, Pollard noted that total Channel crossings for 2026 have decreased by 46% compared to the previous year, with 17,480 arrivals recorded to date.
