Retail Investors Hold Record $3 Trillion in Money-Market Funds
Retail investors hold over $3 trillion in money-market funds, prompting asset managers to urge diversification into bonds and ETFs to combat inflation risks.
Retail investors currently hold over $3 trillion in money-market funds, reaching a near-record high. This surge follows the Federal Reserve's 2022 shift away from near-zero interest rates, which made cash holdings more attractive to individual investors.
JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab Corporation are urging clients to diversify their portfolios, warning that current cash yields may fail to keep pace with inflation. To increase fee revenue and protect client wealth, financial advisers are pitching alternatives including private credit, corporate and municipal bonds, and buffer exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Investment firms like Innovator Capital Management are offering buffer ETFs that provide downside protection with capped upside potential. Other managers argue that longer-duration bonds are necessary to lock in yields before potential rate drops occur. Despite these recommendations, many individual investors remain hesitant to move their capital due to complex investment structures, high fees, and a history of bond underperformance.
