Square Enix Tests Fix for Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 Lag

Square Enix is testing an optimization update to resolve long loading times affecting the new Final Fantasy 14 port on Nintendo Switch 2.

Square Enix released a port of Final Fantasy 14 for the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, marking the first time the MMORPG has been available on a Nintendo console. While players generally praised the game for its performance and display quality, reports surfaced regarding abnormally long loading times when the screen fades to black.

The company confirmed the technical issue occurs primarily when players enter instanced duties while surrounded by many characters, teleport within dungeons, or experience combat phase transitions and revivals after defeat. These delays were attributed to extended data reloading and cache clearing processes required for safe rendering.

Square Enix has since optimized these processes to ensure faster loading. The company is currently testing the updated version to resolve the issue, although it has not yet provided a specific release date for the patch. The game requires over 110 GB of storage and offers a month-long trial before requiring a monthly subscription.
