Ukraine Regains Territory as Russian Progress Slows in April
Ukrainian forces reclaimed 120 square kilometers of territory in April 2026, marking the first net loss for Russian forces since summer 2023.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine oversaw a reversal in territorial trends during April 2026, with Ukrainian forces regaining approximately 120 square kilometers of land. This represents the first net territorial loss for Russian forces since the summer of 2023. Localized Ukrainian advances of 40 square kilometers each occurred across the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Donetsk regions.
Russian military progress has slowed since December 2025, despite capturing a few square kilometers east of Kramatorsk. The shift is attributed to Ukrainian medium-range strikes, seasonal mud, and the Kremlin's restrictions on Telegram. Additionally, a February 2026 disruption of Russian access to Starlink terminals hampered Russian operations.
Diplomatic efforts remain stalled. The Federal Government of Russia proposed a short-term ceasefire to coincide with May 9 Victory Day commemorations. Ukraine rejected the proposal, instead demanding a longer ceasefire to facilitate substantive negotiations.
