Senate Majority PAC Spends $1.2 Million to Boost Scott Colom
Senate Majority PAC launched a $1.2 million ad campaign in Mississippi to support Democratic challenger Scott Colom against Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
The Senate Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, has launched a $1.2 million television and digital advertisement campaign to support Democratic challenger Scott Colom in Mississippi. The ads, which began running Wednesday, characterize incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith as a "do-nothing" senator while highlighting Colom's professional background as a district attorney.
This investment signals a strategic Democratic offensive in deep-red territory as the party attempts to flip the Senate majority. Democrats are leveraging high gas prices, inflation, and an unpopular war in Iran to gain traction. Colom, who would be the first Black senator from Mississippi since Reconstruction, has received support from Senator Raphael Warnock and is scheduled to rally with former Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday.
The Hyde-Smith campaign has dismissed the race's competitiveness, with spokesperson Nathan Calvert criticizing the timing of the spending and labeling Colom's platform as too liberal. Despite these claims, Colom's campaign manager Gerard Henderson maintains that the race is competitive due to a surge in local volunteers and resources. Mississippi has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1982, but Democrats are targeting the state's high proportion of Black voters ahead of the November 3rd election.
