US Navy Sinks Iranian Oil Tanker at Kharg Island

The United States Navy sank an Iranian oil tanker using missiles last week while the vessel was loading at Kharg Island. The terminal is critical to Iran's economy, handling 90 percent of the country's oil exports.

This strike represents a shift in U.S. strategy, moving from financial sanctions to the direct targeting of the physical supply chain. Previously, the Government of China circumvented sanctions by using domestic payment rails and barter-style clearing to continue purchasing Iranian crude.

The action is expected to cause immediate economic distress for China's independent coastal teapot refineries. These facilities produce 25 percent of China's petroleum products and rely heavily on discounted oil from Iran, Russia, and Venezuela. Because these refineries operate on thin margins and lack domestic substitutes, the loss of tankers combined with the existing choking of the Strait of Hormuz has left them with critically low stocks.
