European Shares Decline as HSBC Slumps and Energy Costs Rise

European stock markets fell Tuesday led by a sharp drop in HSBC shares and investor concerns over energy-driven inflation.

European shares declined on Tuesday, with the pan-European STOXX 600 index falling 0.43%. The downturn was most pronounced in the United Kingdom, where the FTSE 100 slid 1%, while the CAC 40 in France fell 0.4% and the DAX in Germany dropped 0.2%.

HSBC drove much of the decline as its shares tumbled over 6% following an earnings report. Despite a jump in headline pre-tax profit, the bank faced a slowdown in its core wealth management division and rising operating costs. Investors also expressed concern over energy-driven inflation linked to elevated crude and natural gas prices.

These losses offset a global rally in technology equities triggered by the initial public offering of Anthropic. In the pharmaceutical sector, Novartis AG shares rose 2.1% after the company raised its full-year guidance for core operating income.

Markets remain cautious ahead of upcoming rate decisions from the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. Investors anticipate the Federal Reserve will keep the target range for the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.75% to 4%, while there is a high probability the European Central Bank will implement a rate hike in December.
