QatarEnergy Seeks US LNG Supplies After Iranian Plant Strike

QatarEnergy is negotiating long-term liquefied natural gas supplies from US exporters to replace domestic production lost to Iranian strikes and maritime disruptions.

The state-owned energy company QatarEnergy is in discussions with United States exporters to secure long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. This move aims to compensate for crippled domestic production caused by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

An Iranian strike during the early stages of the war damaged the Ras Laffan LNG export plant, the largest facility of its kind globally. Repairs to the plant are estimated to take between three and five years. Furthermore, the risk of transporting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz has halted most shipments, severely disrupting Qatar's ability to serve its global customers.

While QatarEnergy already holds a stake in the Golden Pass LNG plant in Texas and manages short-term shipments through its trading unit, these new negotiations signal a strategic shift. The company is now seeking to expand its portfolio outside the Middle East in anticipation of a conflict that could persist through 2029.
