Google Proposes AI Data Center and Grid Expansion in Minnesota

Google proposed a deal with Xcel Energy to build a 780-megawatt AI data center and finance extensive renewable energy upgrades in Pine Island, Minnesota.

Google proposed a deal with Xcel Energy to construct a 780-megawatt AI data center in Pine Island, Minnesota. To support its goal of 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030 and offset the facility's consumption, the company plans to finance 1,400 megawatts of wind, 200 megawatts of solar, and 300 megawatts of battery storage.

Xcel Energy stated that the additional capacity will serve all local customers rather than exclusively powering the data center. The agreement includes exit fees and minimum demand charges to ensure Google remains financially responsible for the infrastructure if AI demand declines. Xcel Energy noted that such protections prevent a scenario where a large buildout occurs with no one to pay for the power.

The project currently awaits approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. While some experts argue that smaller data centers would better utilize existing grid capacity to keep rates low, Google maintains that its capital can help modernize aging energy infrastructure across the United States.
