Ukraine and Russia Deploy Fiber-Optic Drones to Bypass Jamming
Ukrainian and Russian forces are using fiber-optic drones to execute ambushes and bypass electronic warfare jamming through physical data cables.
Ukrainian and Russian forces are increasingly employing fiber-optic drones to execute deception and ambush tactics designed to bypass electronic warfare jamming. Unlike standard first-person view drones, these systems utilize a physical data cable to transmit video and commands, rendering them immune to radio frequency interference.
Operators from the 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment RAID use these drones to scout Russian bunkers and employ a tactic of playing dead on the battlefield to ambush approaching soldiers. Russian forces have adopted similar technology, deploying fiber-optic and solar-powered drones as land mines. These units are placed dormant in grass or along roadways to strike vehicles and troops.
Serhii Beskrestnov, a drone warfare advisor to Ukraine's defense ministry, noted that these tactics are effective and cause significant problems. Despite their stealth and immunity to jamming, the drones are limited by slower flight speeds and fragile cables that can be severed by obstacles or manually cut by soldiers.
