Moeve Begins Construction of Europe's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant

Energy company Moeve has begun construction of the Onuba green hydrogen plant in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, marking the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. The project involves an initial investment of over €1 billion and features 300 megawatts of electrolysis capacity, with a potential expansion to 405 megawatts. The facility is expected to produce between 45,000 and 50,000 metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually, avoiding 250,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Supported by a €304 million grant from the Government of Spain via the European Union's NextGenerationEU program, the project is part of a broader strategic initiative to establish production hubs in Huelva and Cádiz. Moeve, which holds a 51% stake and is controlled by Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company, aims to eventually reach a total capacity of 2 gigawatts and an annual output of 300,000 metric tons of hydrogen. This expansion will support the production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez attended the September 17 launch, framing the facility as a critical step in reducing Europe's external energy dependence. The project is expected to generate more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs. Partners in the first phase include Hy24, COFIDES, Enagás Renovable, and Alter Enersun.
