Companies Deploy Generative AI to Track Employee Emotions
Employers in health care and human resources are using generative AI and facial analytics to monitor employee emotional states and provide psychological support.
Employers across the health care, human resources, and customer service industries are integrating generative AI systems to monitor the psychological states of their workers. These tools range from automated counseling programs to intensive surveillance systems that analyze facial expressions and monitor digital communications across email, Slack, and Zoom to identify morale issues and burnout.
Workplace Options has partnered with Wellbeing.ai to implement a facial analytics platform capable of tracking 62 distinct emotion categories to generate organizational well-being scores. While some employees report that AI-driven responses feel more empathic and less judgmental than human interactions, others express concern that a lack of confidentiality could lead to the misuse of emotional data and potentially damage their career prospects.
Researchers note that these tools may incorporate ethnic and gender biases. They further warn that the creation of a continuous surveillance environment could paradoxically increase worker stress and force employees to modify their natural behavior to avoid negative scoring.
