Joby Aviation Acquires Resonant Sciences for $500 Million

Joby Aviation is acquiring defense technology firm Resonant Sciences for $500 million to expand its presence in the U.S. national security market.

Joby Aviation announced the acquisition of defense technology company Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million. The deal consists of $450 million in cash and $50 million in common stock, with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2027.

Resonant Sciences specializes in radio-frequency and mission systems for U.S. national security customers. Upon completion of the deal, the company will operate as Joby's dedicated defense business. This strategic move allows Joby to scale its operations in a defense market experiencing increased spending driven by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The acquisition provides the combined company with 1 million square feet of manufacturing and testing space in the Dayton, Ohio region. Joby intends to maintain its commercial aircraft business, specifically its electric air taxi initiatives, as a separate entity from the new defense arm.
