Nigel Farage Faces Clacton By-Election Risk Over £5 Million Gift
Nigel Farage may face a recall petition and by-election in Clacton following a standards probe into an undeclared £5 million gift from a crypto-investor.
Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg is investigating whether Nigel Farage failed to properly declare a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based cryptocurrency investor, received before the 2024 General Election. Farage denies any wrongdoing, asserting the funds were for his personal security and were a personal matter that did not require declaration.
Parliamentary rules require the registration of financial support related to an MP's role if given within 12 months of entering parliament. If the investigation leads to a referral to the Committee on Standards and a subsequent suspension from the House of Commons exceeding 10 sitting days, a recall petition could be triggered. A by-election would occur if at least 10% of registered voters in Clacton sign the petition.
Political parties are already preparing for a potential contest. The Conservative Party is working to select a candidate by the end of October, though some shadow cabinet members remain divided on the seat's winnability. Other groups, including Restore Britain, also expect to field candidates. Meanwhile, Farage is reorganizing Reform UK headquarters and launching Reform TV to strengthen voter support as he prepares to fight for his seat.
