JoCasta Zamarripa Prioritizes Undocumented Driver's Licenses in Wisconsin Race

Democratic Secretary of State nominee JoCasta Zamarripa identified securing driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants as her top priority if elected.

Democratic nominee for Wisconsin Secretary of State JoCasta Zamarripa announced that her primary goal if elected is to secure driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants. Zamarripa argues that the policy would improve public safety for all residents by increasing the number of licensed drivers and expanding access to affordable automobile insurance.

While Wisconsin law has barred undocumented immigrants from obtaining licenses since 2007, Zamarripa has previously sponsored similar legislation as a state legislator. She acknowledged that the Secretary of State's office does not issue licenses or manage elections, but she intends to use the position as a platform to advocate for the change.

Zamarripa expressed hope that Democratic nominee for governor David Crowley would sign such a measure into law, though she noted the two have not yet discussed the specific proposal. Zamarripa is running for the office in the November 3 election against Republican Jay Schroeder and Green Party candidate Pete Karas.
