UK Sanctions 15 Sudanese Commanders Over Mass Atrocities

The United Kingdom sanctioned 15 military and militia leaders from Sudan for overseeing campaigns of rape, torture, and systematic starvation.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office sanctioned 15 military commanders, militia leaders, and security officials from the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces on October 26, 2026. The measures include asset freezes and travel bans for individuals suspected of overseeing campaigns of rape, torture, and systematic starvation.

These sanctions specifically target those responsible for atrocities during the 18-month siege and eventual fall of El Fasher in North Darfur, as well as ethnic violence during the retaking of Wad Madani in Gezira State. The decision followed research by the UK-funded Center for Information Resilience, which documented instances of sexual slavery and mass atrocities.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that rape and starvation "are still being weaponised against the people of Sudan." To support affected populations, the UK pledged £15 million in aid, allocating £5 million for survivors of sexual violence and £10 million for humanitarian services in North Darfur and North Kordofan.
