Lawrence Wong Unveils S$70,000 Family Support Package

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced a comprehensive financial and housing support package to combat Singapore's record-low fertility rate of 0.87.

Lawrence Wong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, announced a comprehensive family support package during his National Day Rally speech to address a record-low fertility rate of 0.87. The initiative provides nearly S$70,000 in direct assistance per child through age 17, featuring a S$10,000 baby gift, S$2,000 in annual child credits, and a S$5,000 first step grant.

To alleviate housing constraints, the government will grant families an additional ballot for build-to-order public housing for every child they have or are expecting. The package also expands parental leave and childcare subsidies. Wong stated that the government will stand with families who choose to have children.

Despite these incentives, Wong acknowledged that the labor force will likely grow more slowly, necessitating the continued welcome of immigrants. Some citizens and critics expressed skepticism, arguing that the pressures of the national work and education culture remain more significant barriers to parenthood than financial costs.
