OpenAI Seeks Dismissal of Apple Trade Secret Lawsuit

OpenAI filed a motion on Wednesday to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Apple Inc. in July, which accuses the AI company and former Apple employees of stealing trade secrets to accelerate consumer hardware development. Apple alleges that OpenAI systematically exploited confidential information, specifically regarding metal-finishing techniques, through recruiting practices and supplier relationships.

OpenAI denies the claims, describing the lawsuit as baseless, pretextual, and oddly personal. The company asserts that it has no need for Apple's trade secrets and is building technology entirely distinct from Apple's offerings. The legal battle centers on the future of AI-driven devices that could potentially replace traditional operating systems and smartphones, threatening the market dominance of the iPhone.

Amidst this litigation, OpenAI is developing a doughnut-shaped, battery-powered smart speaker slated for release in 2027. Designed in collaboration with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, the device will lack a display but feature moving parts, lights, and a camera system to create a humanlike, AI-first computing experience. The hardware is expected to retail between $300 and $400 and serves as an entry point for a broader family of devices.

Despite the legal conflict, the two companies maintain a partnership integrating ChatGPT into Siri and iOS. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly developing its own home product featuring a smart hub attached to a robotic limb.
