Investors Shift Billions From South Korean to Taiwanese Stocks

Foreign investors shifted significant capital from South Korean stocks to Taiwanese equities in August following a broad AI sector selloff in July. Investors accumulated $1.7 billion in Taiwanese assets while selling $6.2 billion in South Korean assets during the month.
Foreign investors are favoring Taiwan's diversified tech hardware supply chain and the stability of foundries like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. These assets are viewed as less cyclical than the flash memory dominance of South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc.
Analysts attribute the higher volatility in South Korea to heavier leverage and speculative positioning, particularly through single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds. Although the Kospi currently trades at a record discount compared to the Taiex, the long-term performance of both markets depends on the successful monetization of AI investments.
