Anthropic Research Reveals AI Labor Expectation Gap
Anthropic published research showing its employees expect far more drastic AI-driven labor displacement and GDP growth by 2030 than the general US public.
Anthropic published research on Friday titled "The AI expectations gap," which highlights a stark divide between the views of its 1,334 employees and the general US adult population. The study reveals that most Anthropic staff believe AI will perform at least 80% of their job duties by 2030, while only 5% of US workers hold the same expectation.
Internal predictions at the AI startup are significantly more aggressive than public sentiment. Anthropic employees forecast an unemployment rate exceeding 12% and GDP growth of 17.1% by 2030. In contrast, US adults predict an unemployment rate of roughly 8% and GDP growth of 5.4%.
Chief Economist Peter McCrory noted that because the company leads the general economy in AI adoption, these internal perspectives may serve as a leading indicator for the broader world. These findings align with previous assertions from CEO Dario Amodei that AI functions as a general labor substitute and could trigger an unprecedented short-term shock to the labor market.
