Liberia Launches Initiative for UN Security Council Presidency

The Government of Liberia launched the Road to the UNSC Presidency initiative to prepare for its rotating leadership of the UN Security Council in December 2026.

The Government of Liberia launched the Road to the UNSC Presidency initiative on October 26, 2026, during the country's United Nations Day commemoration in Monrovia. Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, the program prepares the nation to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December 2026.

Liberia is currently serving a 2026–2027 term as a non-permanent member, a position it secured in June 2025. The initiative seeks to leverage Liberia's history of post-conflict peacebuilding to influence global security discussions. Key priorities for the presidency include conflict prevention, climate security, and the inclusion of women and youth in peace processes.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai framed the role as a national responsibility, stating that Liberia is ready to lead and serve. Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti advocated for a shift in the Security Council's approach, suggesting the body look at countries through a broader lens of preventing wars and conflict rather than focusing only on individual nations.
