US Workers Adopt Polyworking to Combat Inflation and Job Instability

Working professionals are increasingly pursuing portfolio careers and side hustles to supplement stagnant salaries and build financial safety nets against potential layoffs.

Working professionals in the United States are increasingly adopting polyworking, a practice where individuals maintain multiple side jobs or build portfolio careers to supplement their primary income. This shift is driven by stagnant salaries, inflation, and rising costs of living, alongside a growing fear of workplace instability and layoffs.

Alexandrea Ravenelle, a sociologist and gig economy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, notes that workers are seeking ways to build a financial safety net. These supplemental revenue streams vary widely, ranging from specialized freelance ventures in social media management, public speaking, and art to gig work on platforms such as Uber, Grubhub, Instacart, and Walmart's Spark platform.

While some individuals pursue these roles to develop new skills or follow personal passions, experts warn of the risks associated with heavy reliance on gig platforms. Researchers highlight that algorithmic pay changes and a potential stigma among permanent employers can create difficulties for those attempting to transition back to traditional full-time employment. Additionally, experts caution workers to remain skeptical of online business opportunities that may be scams.
