IEA Urges Member Nations to Release Diesel Reserves

Fatih Birol called on IEA member governments to accelerate diesel releases to stabilize global markets following attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure.

International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol called on member governments to address tightening global diesel markets ahead of a Governing Board meeting scheduled for October 15. Birol urged members who have not yet fulfilled their Collective Action pledges from March 2026 to accelerate their releases, with a specific priority on diesel.

Birol encouraged all members, including those who have already met their previous commitments, to evaluate whether additional diesel releases are necessary to maintain economic stability and energy security. This push for cooperation follows renewed attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, which included strikes on the international airport in Riyadh.
