ShinyHunters Leaks Rockstar Games Data After Ransom Refusal

ShinyHunters leaked Rockstar Games' internal financial metrics on the dark web after the game publisher refused to pay a ransom by an April 14 deadline.

The hacking group ShinyHunters released stolen data from Rockstar Games on April 13, 2026, after the developer reportedly refused to pay a ransom. The group published the files on its dark web website one day before the established April 14 deadline. ShinyHunters claimed they infiltrated Rockstar's Snowflake data warehouse by obtaining authentication tokens through Anodot, a SaaS cloud-cost monitoring tool used by the publisher.

Rockstar Games confirmed the third-party data breach but downplayed its severity, stating that only a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed. The company asserted that the incident has no impact on its players or the organization, although it later noted that operations may face some delays. While the hackers threatened to cause digital problems, early reports indicate the leaked data consists primarily of financial metrics for GTA Online and Red Dead Online, including regional spending habits, rather than source code or assets for Grand Theft Auto VI.

This event marks the second major security incident for the studio in three years. In 2022, the Lapsus$ group breached an internal Slack channel to leak early gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, an incident that cost the company $5 million in recovery. The recent breach highlights ongoing supply-chain security vulnerabilities for the developer.
