India Reviews Seafarer Safety Amid Ukraine Missile Attacks
Sarbananda Sonowal directed a high-level review to protect Indian seafarers in conflict zones after 13 crew members faced life-threatening attacks in Ukraine.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal conducted a high-level review in New Delhi on Tuesday to evaluate the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers on merchant vessels in conflict-sensitive regions. The meeting included senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Directorate General of Shipping, and heads of Indian missions in Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.
Sonowal mandated that Recruitment and Placement Service Licensees provide pre-departure orientations regarding geopolitical risks and directed officials to integrate mental health support and counseling into the existing welfare framework. These measures follow reports from the Forward Seamen’s Union of India that 13 Indian seafarers aboard the vessel AMIR1 in Chornomorsk, Ukraine, are currently facing life-threatening conditions due to nearby drone and missile attacks. The union has issued urgent appeals for the immediate repatriation of the crew.
