Essar Group to Invest $5.8 Billion in UK Energy Projects

Essar Group will invest 4.3 billion pounds in United Kingdom low-carbon energy transition projects by 2035, centered on the Stanlow refinery.

Essar Group announced plans to invest 4.3 billion pounds ($5.8 billion) in low-carbon energy transition projects across the United Kingdom by 2035. A primary focus of the investment is the transformation of the Stanlow refinery near Liverpool into an energy transition hub. This initiative includes expanding low-carbon hydrogen production and reconfiguring the refinery into a single-train operation to increase high-value product yields and expand processed crude grades.

More than 1 billion pounds of the total investment is nearing a final decision for the Stanlow site, which currently operates at 200,000 barrels per day. The company recently completed a 100 million pound capacity boost and installed a hydrogen-ready furnace. Beyond refining, the group plans to expand its retail network to 800 new fuel supply locations and is exploring the construction of data centers near the refinery.

Prashant Ruia, Chairman of Essar Energy Transition Fuels, stated that the pipeline is intended for "generating massive long-term economic value, and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs". To support these operations, Essar signed a deal in June with the trading arm of Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding for product marketing and crude sourcing. The diversification into low-carbon business aims to mitigate declining demand for conventional transport fuels and stricter emissions regulations.
